Total Ankle Replacement

Ankle joint replacement, also known as total ankle arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure performed to relieve pain and immobility due to end stage ankle arthritis, by removing the ankle joint and replacing it with an artificial implant made of metal and plastic.

Traditionally ankle arthritis was managed by ankle fusion, but recent technological advances have made ankle joint replacement a safe and effective treatment that provides better pain relief, preservation of ankle motion, functional outcomes and improved patient satisfaction.

Dr Symes has extensive international training in ankle joint replacement, including using newer generation ankle prosthesis which are specifically planned and customised to each patient.

It is important to note that ankle replacements are not suitable for all cases of ankle arthritis and Dr Symes will discuss the most suitable treatment options with each patient.

minimally invasive Arthroscopic
Foot Surgery

Minimally invasive or “keyhole” surgery uses the latest advanced technology to treat a variety of foot and ankle conditions using small incisions. It requires specialised training, instruments, equipment and devices and provides many advantages over more traditional surgery, including less pain and scarring, better cosmetic results, shorter hospital stays and quicker recovery times.

Dr Symes has extensive international subspecialty training and experience in the latest minimally invasive techniques.

It is important to note that not all patients are good candidates for minimally invasive surgery and Dr Symes will discuss the most suitable treatment option with each patient.
